Something fishy about brain scans

We have become familiar with images of brain scans in academic journals and in newspapers and blogs. They show us a remarkable inside view of the structure and workings of the brain. But are we interpreting these images correctly, or are we being fooled by some spectacular full-colour pictures?

Of course, one of the first things to note is that the brain does not operate in full colour. The colours on the scans are enhancements of brain activity to reflect different strengths of the signal coming from the scanner. This is the first problem, but there is a much bigger one.
