Psychology of dementia

Hein Le Roux looks at what is being done to bring dementia out of the shadows and to improve the quality of life that people with dementia and their carers experience

According to the Department of Health, if current trends continue one in three people over the age of 65 will develop dementia during their lifetime. There are approximately 800,000 people in the UK who have dementia, and this number is set to double in the next 30 years.

Dementia is most common in older people but younger people can get it too (see Table 1). Women are more likely to be affected — two-thirds of people with dementia are women.
