1 In this article, Hein Le Roux states that dementia is more than simply memory loss. Revisit the Age UK symptom categories on page 29 and give as many suggested examples from as many different categories as you can (e.g. getting lost in a train station, difficulty following GP instructions for medication etc.). Apply this to your own life now (accepting the fact that this condition usually affects much older people). How might having dementia at your age affect your daily life? Hopefully this challenge will give you a powerful insight into the nature of dementia.

2 Dementia is diagnosed through a series of cognitive screening tests, blood tests and a CT scan of the brain. From what you have learned about defining and diagnosing ‘abnormality’, what practical and/or ethical issues might also be relevant to diagnosing dementia?
