1 In their own studies, Hornsey and Jetten found that 95% of people see themselves as less conformist than their peers (this is part of a ‘self-serving attributional bias’). Suggest at least three possible reasons, not covered in the article, why individuals may view their own behaviour differently from that of their friends? (Hint: could this serve different functions for different individuals?)
2 The authors also suggest that conformity provides us with different learning opportunities and that this starts early on in our lives. Why do you think 2-year-old children copy (i.e. imitate) an adult opening a box, even when they know an easier way to do this? How do we best decide whether or not to conform as adults and what factors do we take into account?
