Clinical psychologist Deborah Allen provides personal insights into the experience of having a diagnosis of schizophrenia

Have you ever thought about what it might be like to hear voices or have a diagnosis of schizophrenia? Have you ever wondered whether you yourself hear voices and how this experience might be different from someone who has a diagnosis of schizophrenia?

I hear voices. The Hearing Voices Network has helped people to understand that the experience of hearing voices is quite common and normal. The voice I hear is in my head. It is my internal dialogue and it reminds me about the things I have to do, like rehearsing the things I need to buy at the supermarket. It will inform me about how I am doing, like alerting me to people’s body language when I am talking to them and letting me know if people are understanding what I am saying.
