Paul Morris’ article is fascinating because it challenges both popular opinion in psychology and common sense about perception. I was lucky enough to be a participant in one of Paul’s studies a few years ago and it stuck in my mind as a good student practical. The aim of this study is to see whether there is a difference between how well people with a good knowledge of a sport and those with no experience of it understand incidents in a game.
The standard cognitive model of perception predicts that people who can bring prior understanding to a situation will understand it better. If, however, Morris is right there should often be enough visual information in a scene for anyone to understand it, regardless of their prior knowledge.
