Stereotypes and ageing

All of us, including older people, have stereotypical ideas about ageing. These affect how we age. Katherine Bercovitz and Professor Ellen Langer explain

Think about old age. What comes to mind? Wrinkles? Nursing homes? Cabinets full of pill bottles? If any of these were your first thought, you are not alone. In Western society, ageing has become almost synonymous with deterioration. Becoming older is typically associated with the process of decline — both of body and mind.

Research about ageing often reflects age stereotypes, focusing on the ways that older adults are no longer able to remember as much as they used to, or move around as well as they once did. It is characterised by phrases like ‘too old’ and ‘can’t any more’.
