A-level psychology is more scientific than students often expect — but it is a science subject, so it is important that the specification reflects this. In days gone by, coursework was an important element of A-level exams and was a way of giving students a chance to see science at work and showing them the real process underlying psychological research. Now that coursework is no longer permitted in psychology, students potentially have less contact with these scientific processes and may fail to see the value of studying ‘research methods’.
The Edexcel specification has tried to find ways to increase student understanding of scientific psychology. There are two ways in which it does this:
