Health education specialist Theresa Brown explores the reasons why people exercise, and discusses how some reasons are better for your long-term health than others

Have you ever thought about what motivates you to adopt a new behaviour? For example, think of exercise…what makes you decide to try a new move, routine, machine or class? Do you find that some reasons keep you going for longer than others? Do you ever wonder why some people can be devoted to an exercise their entire life (such as running), while others may struggle to make exercise an everyday routine?

When we start something new, like a new workout regime, our motivation to adopt the behaviour can influence whether or not we continue to our goal. Our motivation can come from many different sources and, generally, the reasons fall into one or more categories (Silberstein et al. 1988), such as:
