Beyond obsession

What is love? What is being ‘in love’? Both are difficult to put into words, and yet we know and use these terms all the time — usually in a positive, kindly way. But there is a form of love which is a living nightmare, filled with pain, deluded by hope and difficult to escape from. It is called limerence.

Limerence is obsessive, irrational and incapacitating. It involves adoration and attachment to one person, often but not always someone you don’t know, or don’t know anything about. It involves excessive thinking about and longing for this other, the limerent object (LO), and an emotional dependency on him or her.
