How good are you at psychology? Perhaps more importantly, how good are you capable of being? The government requires teachers to provide ‘stretch and challenge’ (S&C) opportunities for students. Although this type of work is targeted at the most able and highly motivated, everyone can feel the benefits.

Until quite recently (2009), there was a separate exam for ‘gifted and talented’ students called the Advanced Extension Award (AEA). I was lucky enough to be chief examiner and saw some quite brilliant exam scripts. However, in the last curriculum revision it was decided to discontinue this and ‘build it’ into the regular A-levels.
