Autism is a developmental disorder. Although usually diagnosed in childhood, autism affects people throughout their lives. There is wide variation from one person to another. However, generally autism is associated with problems in three areas:

■ Communication. Autism is associated with speech or other language difficulties. Some individuals may struggle more with non-verbal communication.
