Has anyone ever told you to ‘give 110%’? This happens frequently in sports between a coach or manager and a player. Usually the player is told to give something beyond 100%. Think about it. Does that really make sense? How can you give more than 100%?

Although we may not be able to produce more than 100%, research in psychology and sport psychology has found that we frequently do not give 100% effort, particularly in group or team settings. We tend to give less than our best. One explanation has been referred to as social loafing.
