Children are like gender detectives, actively searching for clues in the environment that will help them differentiate between males and females and guide their own behaviour in accordance with their own gender. Our article explored how children learn about and interact within their gendered world through the creation of gender schemas. The following questions and activities will help you further understand gender schemas and how they are applied in everyday life.

Think about any young children you know — those of about pre-school age — such as brothers or sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbours, or even yourself when you were young. Can you recall any specific instances when information from gender schemas was applied in a humorous or amusing way?
