Stepping up to Edexcel A 2

Senior examiner Christine Brain shows how to approach A2 examination questions and get the most from your answers

ANDREA DANTI/FOTOLIA

This article focuses on the A2 units and shows how your AS experience will help with your pursuit of the A-level. The specification is planned to develop through the A-level course and the exam papers are no exception.

Table 1 summarises how each unit is assessed. As you can see, there are short-answer questions and extended writing in both the A2 and the AS, and a 12-mark essay is found in all papers. The end essay of Unit 4 has 18 marks but is in essence a 12-mark essay with 6 quality of written communication marks as well, so similar marking issues apply. Unlike the AS there are no specific multiple-choice questions in the A2.
