Clare Whittle’s article gives you an excellent update on a specific aspect of face recognition research which will certainly enhance your understanding of the area. In these student activities I will help you put this research into context. Remember that examination boards encourage you to be synoptic in your answers and you will receive credit for such relevant material in your answers.

Two of the major perception theories are top–down processing (usually associated with Richard Gregory) and bottom–up processing (J. J. Gibson). In order to place the work described in the article in relation to these theories, you first need to ensure you are fully familiar with them.
