1 A‘talking therapy’ might reasonably be called a psychological treatment, whereas a drug might be called a chemical or physical treatment. This seems like a clear distinction but where is caution needed in extending the distinction to the effects of the treatments?

2 Look back at Figure 1 and the section of the article that dis-cusses some example situations using the diagram. Now consider the following: Depression can arise from a social loss such as bereavement or divorce. It can also arise from a tumour in the body that triggers an excessive level of secretion of a hormone termed cortisol. In the brain, there are receptors that are occupied by cortisol. Compare and contrast these two situations in terms of Figure 1.
