As an A-level psychology student, you will be expected to define schizophrenia, discuss classification systems (e.g. DSM-IV-R and ICD 10) including practical and ethical issues, and also describe and evaluate both psychological and biological treatment options for schizophrenia. James Main’s article will be particularly helpful for the latter part of this specification requirement.

1 In terms of the effectiveness of patient medication (i.e. one example of the biological approach), Dr Main argues that ‘nothing else has been shown to have quite such a profound effect on patients’ symptoms and quality of life’.
