What used to be called multiple personality disorder (MPD) is now known as dissociative identity disorder (DID). According to the American Psychiatric Association’s current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR 2000) two of the diagnostic criteria for DID are:

■ the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states (‘alters’), each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to and thinking about the environment and the self
