How social is social psychology?

How social is social psychology?

In this article Paul Humphreys explores the past and present of social psychology, not only across time, but also place and culture, and makes the case for a genuinely social psychology

After reading this article and completing the student activities on page 27 you will be able to carry out a good critical evaluation (AO2/3 if you will) of social psychology in general and some famous studies in particular (such as those in the field of social influence). Let’s begin with a little bit of psychology history…

It was once said that psychology had a long past but a short history. The past of general psychology goes considerably further back than social psychology but both have their origins in European (most often German) philosophies. According to most sources (e.g. Hogg and Vaughan 2011, Farr 1996, Graumann 1988), our two key starting dates are 1863 and 1879. Both dates concern the contributions of the same person: Wilhelm Wundt.
