Why do we love music?

Here’s a little exercise to start us off. Cover this page and on a piece of paper write down a list of the five most important things in your everyday life. Then return to this page.

There will be differences between all our lists but I would be surprised if your family and friends were not on there. I would also be a little surprised if music was not there too. (OK, the title of the article was a bit of a give away!) So why do we love music? It has no obvious survival value (unlike sex or food and drink, for example) and yet it plays a central part in many of our lives. Next time you are walking along a crowded pavement, take a mental note of how many of your fellow walkers or runners have earphones in. At home and in our social lives we often surround ourselves with music. But why?
