One of the fascinating things about social psychology is that you don’t need to look in textbooks or laboratories to find its subject matter. It is all around you, because this is social psychology — the study of social behaviour in all its many different guises. Where better to study social behaviour than at the cinema or in front of the television? So sit back, fire up the DVD player and let’s start studying social psychology.

A recent report by the Islamic Human Rights Commission (Ameli et al. 2007) claims that popular films ranging from Hollywood blockbusters to children’s cartoons are depicting ‘crude and exaggerated’ stereotypes of Muslims and perpetuating Islamophobia. The report argues that films such as Aladdin and the comedy East is East have helped reinforce prejudicial attitudes.
