A short skirt, the internet and anonymity

Redchopsticks.com LLC/Alamy

In an article in the Sunday Times, ‘Even a child isn’t spared by the nameless internet poisoners’ (15 February 2009), India Knight picks up on some information she found on a web blog site (www.currybet.net). It tells a frightening story of our times and one that raises a number of issues of interest to psychologists. Worryingly, it is a completely true story and it happened this year, so we are not talking history.

This is the story that Knight recounted. A 13 year-old girl had gone to school wearing a skirt that was too short. Her teacher told her she looked like a ‘slut’ and said that the skirt ‘does nothing for your cellu-lite’. The newspaper reporting this story identified the child and named the school she attends. Like all newspapers, it encouraged readers to comment on articles. They did so in their dozens. Many agreed with the teachers: the girl did look like a ‘slut’ and was dumpy too.
