With its population passing 1.4 billion in June 2023, India overtook China to become the most populous nation on earth, leading to a switch in position at the top of the population charts for the first time since the United Nations began tracking demographic data in the 1950s.
The early 2020s saw India’s economy grow so rapidly that it moved into the top five global economies, according to the International Monetary Fund. In addition, there is little doubt that India’s global influence is at an all-time high. US Vice President Kamala Harris and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak both have Indian backgrounds, and Indian-born technology experts lead several of the USA’s most influential companies, including Microsoft and Alphabet.
