The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949, just 4 years after the conclusion of the Second World War, which had seen capitalist USA and Communist USSR join forces to defeat their common enemy in Europe, fascist Nazi Germany. With Hitler defeated, however, the bonds that kept these two ideologically opposed powers together was weakened, and by 1949 the relationship between these two superpowers had descended into mutual distrust and suspicion.
