All AQA A-level politics essays are based on statements that are designed to be controversial and to encourage debate. Essays are not about information or facts, but about analysis, debate and showing you understand the different perspectives on an issue. There is usually not a ‘right’ answer: sometimes you might agree with the statement, other times you might disagree, but you need to have considered both sides and to be able to justify your answer.
Each statement will be based on a particular area of the specification. You need to find the key word in the statement, which is usually the adjective. For example, with the following statement, the key word is ‘significant’:
