The 2020 election saw Joseph R. Biden finally achieve his life’s ambition: to become president of the USA. After two failed attempts (1988 and 2008), the former senator and vice president to Barack Obama was sworn in as the 46th president on 20 January 2021. Biden entered office with an impressive record: three decades of service in both the legislative and executive branches. Following on from the divisive Trump era, Biden promised a return to politics-as-usual and to be a figure of national unity rather than partisan division. One year in, what verdict can be given on his relative success?
