Voting behaviour in the 2020 US presidential election

How can we explain the patterns of voting behaviour?

All exam specifications relating to US politics require knowledge and analysis of voting behaviour and factors that influence voting patterns.

Key issues of the 2020 election included dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, affordable healthcare, jobs, the economy and racial inequality. Prior to Covid-19, political scientists had been predicting a victory for Donald Trump, but exit poll data showed that Joe Biden was trusted more than Trump to handle the pandemic, by 53% to 43%. This appears to have been the defining issue of the election, although other factors were of differing levels of importance to various demographics (Table 1).
