The 1992 UK general election

What were the factors that led to the Conservatives’ 1992 general election victory?

John Major on the campaign trail

Both AQA and Edexcel require you to study three general elections, one of which must be from 1945–97.

The 1992 general election saw the Conservatives under John Major win their fourth consecutive election with a reduced majority of 21 seats. This victory was in spite of a poor economy and the dramatic fall of previous prime minister Margaret Thatcher in November 1990. Many pollsters had predicted that Labour’s Neil Kinnock would be the next prime minister, but the ability of the Conservatives to exploit Labour’s weakness on the economy and possibly the influence of the media helped John Major keep the keys of 10 Downing Street.
