Karl Marx (1818–83) was a German philosopher, economist and historian whose work remains hugely influential, shaping political and economic arrangements globally. Aided by his close intellectual collaborator and patron Friedrich Engels (1820–95), Marx provided a critique of capitalism and a theory of history that claimed a ‘scientific’ basis for socialism (and eventually communism) as an inevitable, and revolutionary, stage in human development.
