Beatrice Webb

The political ideas sections of the AQA and Edexcel specifications require knowledge and understanding of Beatrice Webb’s contribution to evolutionary socialism and the cooperative movement.

Beatrice Webb (1858–1943) was the child of an affluent merchant family, who cast off Victorian conventions concerning class and gender to become a key socialist thinker and writer. She helped shape both the Fabian Society and the Labour Party, and in doing so had a huge impact on the development of evolutionary socialism in Britain.
