Beatrice Webb (1858–1943) was the child of an affluent merchant family, who cast off Victorian conventions concerning class and gender to become a key socialist thinker and writer. She helped shape both the Fabian Society and the Labour Party, and in doing so had a huge impact on the development of evolutionary socialism in Britain.
