Since David Cameron’s election as leader of the Conservative Party in 2005, when he argued for replacing the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) with ‘a modern British Bill of Rights to define the core values which give us our identity as a free nation’, there has been a desire among UK politicians across the political spectrum to either scrap the HRA and replace it with a written bill of rights, or to build on the HRA, developing it into a more comprehensive written document outlining the relationship of rights and responsibilities between the British people and the government. With all this political and legal support, it is surely time to move towards a bill of rights for the UK.
