Feminism and patriarchy

Maria Egan evaluates contrasting views of patriarchy within feminist theory

The AQA and Edexcel specifications focus on debates about the nature of feminism, core feminist values and feminist ideas and thinkers.

A patriarchy is a society in which men wield the power over political, economic and social life. Male control of these spheres has existed across generations, making it entrenched and hard to alter, not least because just as men are empowered within patriarchal societies, so women are disempowered.
