Prime minister Boris Johnson issued the stark instruction ‘Stay at home, protect the NHS, and save lives’ to the British people on 23 March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This order was enshrined in statute law just 2 days later when the Coronavirus Act 2020 was given royal assent, bringing with it unprecedented restrictions on British freedoms.
