All major examination boards require an understanding of the impact and importance of emerging and minor parties to UK politics and debates, alongside debates around the development of a multi-party system in the UK.

The two-party system, with the Labour and Conservative parties dominating both the vote share and the seats in Westminster, is an established feature of UK politics. However, the long-term trend shown in Table 1 reflect that there is increasing fragmentation of UK politics, with the vote share for the two main parties in a long, slow decline, reaching a low point in 2015.
