This year marks 20 years since powers were devolved from Westminster to the Scottish Parliament and executive (Box 1). The key aims of the Scottish Parliament are to be accessible and accountable, and these aims dictate how the Parliament interacts with the people of Scotland.
1978 The Scotland Act was passed, which allowed the establishment of a Scottish assembly if a referendum approved this proposal. The referendum required the approval of at least 40% of the Scottish electorate.
