Of all the political ideologies included in A-level politics, multiculturalism is probably the most misunderstood. This arises from a confusion of two terms: multiculturalism and multicultural societies. The two are not synonymous.
It is true that multiculturalism is impossible without the existence of a multicultural society — asociety marked by assorted cultures, religions and languages, of the sort now found in most British and American cities. Yet, as Will Kymlicka lamented:
