The complexities of human rights

Why is it so difficult to establish an international standard of human rights protection? John Jefferies assesses the complexities of defending human rights on a global scale

Human rights are covered in Unit 3 (global politics) of the Edexcel specification. Questions on human rights could appear in any section. Remember that if a question on human rights appears in Section B, your answer will need to refer to core (conservative, liberal, socialist) thinkers.

The problem with the concept of universal human rights is that rights can be defined in many different ways. The ways in which governments determine the rights of their citizens also make it hard to establish a global standard of human rights that would have universal jurisdiction.
