Political ideas examination specifications require students to analyse and evaluate debates about the nature of socialism and to understand core socialist views and differing tensions within the ideology.

Socialism, very broadly, is the advocacy of varying degrees of collectivism, equality and common ownership of the economy, based on a belief in human altruism. That said, any ideology which can encompass Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Jeremy Corbyn and Tony Blair is clearly exceptionally wide ranging. Some varieties of socialism want to abolish capitalism outright, whereas others embrace it. Some socialists have pursued the revolutionary road, whereas others are committed parliamentarians. Is there more that divides socialists than unites them?
