Emerging powers are the states that have undergone rapid development and industrialisation in recent years. These states were not considered to be significant powers at the end of the Cold War but have grown tremendously in the decades that followed. The most significant of these powers are generally seen as the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Sometimes the ‘S’ in the acronym is capitalised to include South Africa, but this is more contested. These states all have significant economies, structural power, political and cultural influence and, to varying degrees, military strength.
