Locke was born in 1632 and died in 1704.
Locke argued that mankind was egotistical and driven by self-interest. Human beings, he claimed, had an ‘eternal longing’ to be self-fulfilled, independent and masters of their own destiny. His view of human nature was also optimistic: mankind was rational, intelligent and respectful of others.
