The ideas and policies of the SNP

The elected SNP MPs celebrating their 56 seats in the 2015 general election

The Scottish National Party has been the dominant party in Scotland for over 10 years (Boxes 1 and 2). Not only does it dominate the Scottish Parliament, but it is also the third largest party in the House of Commons, where it now holds 35 seats. Its vision, according to the party’s website, is as follows:

Nicola Sturgeon, a former solicitor, is the Scottish first minister and the leader of the SNP. She became leader after Alex Salmond resigned, following 2014’s ‘No’ vote in the referendum. She was the only candidate to stand in the leadership election and was seen as his natural successor.
