The first step to success at AS is to familiarise yourself as much as possible with the specification requirements. If you have not already done so, download a copy of the AS specifications from the AQA website. As well as focusing on the examination content and the structure of the examination itself, spend some time getting to grips with the skills — both general and specific — that you are required to demonstrate (see page 9 of the AS specification at www.tinyurl.com/y8eweoxj).
The AS content and the examination itself are split into two sections. Five topics are in Section A, government of the UK, and five topics are in Section B, politics of the UK. While arranging the content in this way helps to make the course more manageable, many topics overlap and you are also expected to ‘develop a broad understanding of the historical development of government and politics in the UK in order to know and understand in detail contemporary politics in the UK’.
