The term ‘hegemony’ has been employed throughout the history of international politics. Usually seen to have derived from the Greek hegemonia, meaning leader, the term was first used to refer to the way in which the dominant city-state in ancient Greece was able to assert its authority over the wider civilisation as a whole.
