Is liberalism compatible with democracy?

Many people believe that liberalism and democracy are synonymous because democratic values like accountability, open government, a codified constitution and the separation of powers are strongly supported by liberals. Liberal support for greater democracy rests on a deep commitment to people power and an optimistic view of human nature. However, it is also the case that liberals are critical of democracy. Indeed, some may argue that there is a fear of democracy within liberalism. This article explores this apparent contradiction and asks ‘Is liberalism compatible with democracy?’
