Table 1 Themes for short-answer questions

The focus of short-answer questions is on analysis. This means looking at things closely and explaining them, not just describing them. This analysis needs to be backed up by knowledge and understanding. Short-answer questions have a narrow and specific focus and do not require debate or evaluation. They are never open ended and do not require an essay type structure — no introduction, only a very brief plan and no conclusion.

Detailed revision is the key to success in this part of the exam. Short-answer questions are very specific and may refer to a small area of the specification (Table 1) that you did not spend long on in class. If you have not revised carefully, you will not have enough to write.
