How to avoid generic answers in 25-mark essays

One of the most common reasons for students to fall short of their examination potential is that they produce generic pre-prepared answers rather than answering the specific question asked. With this in mind, there are five steps to ensure that that you maximise your marks in the 25-mark essay response.

Understanding the assessment objectives (AOs) and the distribution of marks for the 25-mark questions is vital (Box 1). From the outset, make sure that you know how to structure an appropriate 25-mark essay response. Even prior to more detailed advice on avoiding generic responses and answering the specific question set, you need to be absolutely clear about how to structure a response that allows for effective analysis, balanced arguments, objectivity and the integration of concepts and theories within your evaluation.
