How to structure 25-mark questions

When it comes to 25-mark questions, if you get the structure right then it is fairly straightforward to reach the top level. However, if you get the structure wrong then, no matter how much you know, you will struggle to achieve success in your essays. This article explains how to get the basic structure or ‘skeleton’ of an essay right so that you can achieve the best possible marks in your exam.

The first step is come up with the basic outline or plan for your essay. For any 25-mark question, you should aim to have four key or ‘big picture’ points to discuss. This requires you to interpret the individual question and identify what the key points will be, but usually you will be looking for features, functions or key issues (see examples in Box 1).
