Your first job is to decode the question. Whether the question is set by your teacher or you find it by opening an exam paper, you need to work out what it is actually asking you. All essay questions contain a debate and once you have spotted this then the essay becomes straightforward. A2 political ideology essays are either ‘to what extent?’ questions or a phrase/quotation followed by ‘discuss’.
First of all, think about all the strands of the ideology you are writing about (e.g. liberal, conservative, anti-colonial or expansionist nationalism). Then you need to decide how these strands can be applied to the question:
