The 5-mark questions are usually considered as entry level questions and, as such, it is pretty straightforward to get 2 or 3 marks. However, gaining 5/5 is something many students find difficult. When every mark counts it is important to understand how you can get full marks on each question. The following tips and advice should help you to understand how to guarantee 5/5 on the part (a) questions.
To start with, read the question carefully. It might seem obvious, but often students see the topic and rush in with stock phrases and points. This will usually be enough to pick up some marks, but is unlikely to achieve full marks. For example, if the question were ‘Describe the workings of the STV electoral system’ it is clearly asking you to give details of the way in which the system works, not where it works. Saying that the system is used in Northern Ireland will not gain you credit as it is not relevant to the question, so make sure you understand what the question requires.
